Perfect Fifths Review
As the name implies, “Perfect Fifths” is perfect in its imperfection. Ms. McCafferty completely shifts the narrative but with appropriate reason and successful effect. While the beginning of the novel may confuse fans of the Jessica Darling series, the third person narration is engrossing. It allows readers to step out of Jessica’s world and see the world from Marcus’ perspective as well. The past three years have undoubtedly altered Jessica and Marcus for the better, and McCafferty’s tale elegantly retells the story of their courtship, updating readers on the details of their fascinating lives. But perhaps what is most striking about the tale are the methods that McCafferty employs to convey Jessica and Marcus’ story–she incorporates long sections of witty, captivating banter as well as sensual and provocative poetry. As Jessica ages, her language becomes denser, more descriptive, but also more insightful. Her story is, as it always is, captivating and relatable. Though the story takes place all within 24 hours and focuses mostly on Marcus and Jessica, there is plenty of action and plenty of interaction with other characters. McCafferty manages to weave the past ten years into a complete, circular narrative while making readers feel like a true part of the tale. The story as a whole plays with improbability and its connection with density, forcing readers to revive hope and reconsider love. “Perfect Fifths” is the inevitable conclusion of the Jessica Darling series–the perfect eternal culmination of an unlikely relationship
